How to Change Your Habits

By our ministry partner: Daniel King

The best way to begin changing your habits is by changing your thinking. “Do not conform any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind…”(Romans 12:2). The pattern of this world is a set of habits. This pattern of habits is often called the rat-race of life. It is composed of the continual search for another dollar, the lusting after wrong things, the coveting of a neighbor’s worldly goods, or the search for adventure; all of these things form a pattern of habits. People wake up in the morning, and they race through the day, thinking only of themselves, and then they fall into bed at night without accomplishing anything. Every day, God is not acknowledged, and the person continues to live a life of sin, day in and day out, for an entire life.

A change of habits will only come with a change of mind. This change of mind must occur through God’s word. The only way to renew your mind is by knowing God.

When you renew your mind with God’s word, you begin to think like Jesus. When you think like Jesus, you act like Jesus. Suddenly, habits change. The worldly pattern of lying, cheating, stealing, coveting, and hatred is suddenly transformed.

A new set of habits begins to form in the place of the old habits. The habit of loving others, the habit of being thankful, the habit of worshiping God; these are the habits of a person whose mind has been renewed by the word of God. Focus shifts from, “me, me, me” to “God, God, God” The question changes from “What do I want to do?” to “What does God want me to do?”

Love Listens

by Ken Blount

God created the human ear to catch and transmit sound to the brain, enabling us to receive and interpret messages.

Unfortunately, the Bible tells us that all too often human ears become like those of heathen gods: “Having ears, they hear not…” (Psalm 135:17)

God is a great listener. He listens because He loves us. When you come to Him with something on your heart, He not only receives you, but you have His full, undivided attention. You have the total interest and awareness of the God of the Universe concerning your problem.

Listening is an important part of showing someone that you love him or her.

Love listens. You can say over and over and over again, “I love you,” but the best way you can show your spouse that you love them is to listening to them.

I’m talking about turning off the television and looking them in the eyes when they are talking to you. I’m talking about not answering your cell phone when it rings in the middle of your conversation. I’m talking about not flipping through a magazine while you ask, “How was your day?” If you really care you’ll put the magazine away before you ask that question, showing your spouse that you really want to know and that you’re interested in what he or she is going to say.

Recently, I read about a coffee house in San Francisco with soundproof booths, where for an hourly fee, a patron will be provided with someone who will listen to them.Business has been good.

People want to be listened to so badly that they’re willing to pay a complete stranger just to have someone with whom they can share their thoughts, feelings, and problems.

The sense of being listened to is something everyone desperately needs. Maybe you’re thinking, “I’m the one who needs to be heard.”

If you are, I’ve got great news: The Bible says that you will reap what you sow. So start listening!

Praying or worrying out loud?

This wonderful post comes from one of our ministry partners, Chas Stevenson! It’s an insightful blog  about how Christians sometimes use prayer as an excuse to worry, instead of a solution to worry!

Please feel free to check us out on our Twitter pages, @promoteministry and @mycteach, as well as our Facebook and website! It blesses us to hear from all of you!

One day I was driving along in my car and God spoke to me something that could solve many people’s faith and prayer issues. He said, “I have given my people a secret weapon called prayer. Prayer is supposed to replace worry. Prayer is supposed to be the substitute for anxiety. They are not supposed to exist together. If people find themselves worrying after they have prayed, then what they did in the first place was not praying – it was only worrying out loud.”

Have you ever worried out loud to God? I think I might have once or twice. And what good did it do me? Not much. And I can tell you exactly what God did in answer to me – not much. Worrying out loud has nothing to do with the prayer of faith. Faith-filled, miracle working prayer does not grovel to God nor rehearse all the details of its difficulties. Effective prayer makes a mature, heartfelt, calculated request to God based on God’s Word, God’s will, and our own desire. And then it leaves the care with God, moving on without worry, knowing that our Father has heard and will handle it.

It seems that we sometimes complicate the life of faith. We get all 10-point-sermoned-to-the-hilt, and then we get scared thinking that we’ve missed something. When the truth is that the only obstacle to our prayer was that we just did that one thing God said not to do – worry. “Do not fret or have any anxiety about anything.” (Phi. 4:6 Ampl.) It may be hard to do sometimes. But we must fight the urge to worry. How do we fight? Do whatever it takes: read your Bible, get more scriptures, confess the scriptures out loud, yell, holler, run around the block, pray in tongues, go soulwinning, or go shopping. It doesn’t really matter how you beat the worrying. Just do it. How long must we fight? Until the answer comes.

In the Christianity Basics – Finance 101 section of the Bible (Matthew Chapter 6), Jesus outlines God’s side of this New Covenant concerning our money. It is wonderful that we find how our Heavenly Father likes us better than a bird and better than a flower and how He will always care for us. However, it seems that many times we fail on our side of this New Covenant. Jesus said that our side is to “.do not worry. So why do you worry?…Therefore do not worry.” (verses 25-31). Though God would love to do everything good for His children regardless of their faith condition, His partnership regulation for earth life requires that His people do their part to get His involvement. Every divine intention requires a corresponding human response. His hands are handcuffed when we worry but released to help when we don’t.
Worry is the litmus test for our faith because if the “paper turns blue”, it is the proof that we do not fully trust. If we recognize worry in our heart after we pray, we’ve not yet connected to God with full assurance of faith. So we shouldn’t expect anything to happen. I always encourage people to be honest with themselves as to their own personal faith condition so they can take appropriate action. They might need to go back to the Truth of God’s Word and spend some time driving out our fears and worries. And then pray again. I assure you that when God hears a prayer of faith that is purified from all trace of just “worrying out loud”, He rushes in to answer.

And the winner is…

Spice it up! The Internet Mix

This post comes from Ryan Choate at OurChurch.com. It’s a great read on how to mix up your internet marketing strategy! As always, make sure you check us out on our Twitter pages, @promoteministry and @mycteach, as well as our Facebook and website! We want to hear from you!

Do you market yourself on the internet? I’m not talking about the free stuff: Facebook pages, Twitter accounts, Foursqare pages. Those are certainly necessary, but there’s a second step that requires more commitment and risk, but offers a bigger return. I’m talking about the paid stuff: Google ads, Facebook ads, paid search results, etc.

If you don’t, I understand. Why should you pay for things you virtually can get for free? Here are a few things to think about before you submit your budget for 2012.

  1. Validity. This has a lot to do with perception. Even though audiences know ads are bought, they still give them more credibility. Paid channels make products and service look valid. They look for real. They come across more professional. They become the real deal. You can argue all you want on this point, but those that advertise generally do better, especially those with multiple locations. Still don’t believe people actually click them? I can show you daily campaign limits maxed out for weeks that have reached millions of people.
  2. Growth. It will grow your social audience. Don’t believe someone knows about your page and just decided not to like it. Most likely, they’ve never come across your page and thus never had the opportunity to like it. And yes, this includes your regular church attenders. Ads give you a great way to tell them and immediately get their like. You can even wind-up paying less than $1 per like. Compare that to direct mail.
  3. Excitement. Those that are already a part of your organization will love seeing its name all over the web. And when people are excited, they talk about it. When people talk about it, others learn about it and come.

Remember, you don’t have to do everything. You only need to do those things that will reach your target. OK, if your target is everyone then you might need to do everything. But I’m sure when you really look at what you’re promoting, you can find a core audience that will only show up in a few of your channels. Internet channels allow you to be very discriminating, unlike mass media. It’s also cheaper, and you can see results on a daily basis or hourly if you’re as OCD as me.

Have you bought internet ads? From whom? What were the results? Why haven’t you?

Is Marketing Evil?

Here is a very helpful blog post by Paul Steinbrueck with Church Marketing Online about marketing in the church! By the way check out our Facebookand website if you have a chance! We want to hear from you! And of course, you can find out us out on Twitter, @promoteministry and @mycteach.

Is Marketing Evil?

Is marketing evil?

Some people believe the church can be more effective by utilizing processes most commonly and effectively used in business today, including marketing.  In fact there are companies that specifically help churches develop a logo, a slogan, a website, brochures, and a multi-faceted marketing campaign much the same way other companies develop these elements to launch a new business.

On the other hand, some people abhor these practices and think the church should stay as far away from them as possible.  They believe marketing is deceptive, manipulative, superficial, worldly, and yes – evil.

And then there’s the middle ground where I think most of us find ourselves.  We want our churches to reach more people in our communities.  We want to express the passion and love we have for God and people.  If people would just come to a Sunday service, we know God would show up and touch their hearts and show them the amazing life they could have with Him in it.  We want to let people know about the opportunities God has for them, but it’s so hard to get people’s attention in this media-saturated culture.  We want to reach out, but we don’t want resort to hype, gimmicks, or starkly corporate tactics.

Is marketing the way to do that, or is marketing evil?

Objections to church marketing usually fall into one of five categories.

1) Marketing is manipulative.
Some people believe that marketing is inherently manipulative, that marketing is all about overselling positive and concealing the negative, or that marketing has to play to people’s fears or emotions to be effective.

Now if you’re a company selling something that is bad for people like tabloid magazines or junk food, manipulation is pretty much your only option.  But if you provide something that is truly beneficial to people, then there’s no reason to be manipulative or disingenuous.  Churches help people connect with God, and through that connection people find unconditional love, peace, daily guidance, purpose for their lives, community, and eternal life.  No other organization on earth can match that.

2) Marketing is superficial.
Other people claim that marketing promotes style over substance.  You sell the sizzle not the steak, right?  You tell people what they want to hear, right?

Unfortunately, I think a lot of churches actually are guilty of promoting superficial elements of who they are in order to appeal to people.  I’ve seen numerous churches talk about having the rockin’est worship band, the funnest kids program, the coolest youth rec building, or most inspiring messages.  There’s nothing wrong with being rockin’, fun, cool, and inspiring, but if those are the reasons you are telling people they should attend your church, then that’s what people are going to expect.  At that point you have to either keep things superficial, which defeats the whole purpose of helping people to connect to God, or you have to “bait and switch” when it comes to the hard parts of following Christ.

But here again churches have an advantage when it comes to marketing because they don’t have to be superficial.  A church doesn’t have to claim to have the rockin’est worship band when it can provide a worship experience where people can connect to God through music and words they can relate to and mean with all their hearts.  It doesn’t have to have the funnest kids program when it can give children a spiritual and moral foundation in a setting they will enjoy and remember.

In fact, churches that market themselves on style are missing a huge opportunity because the church has so much substance to offer, and deep down people really do want substance.

3) Marketing sucks.
Another objection people have to church marketing in particular is that it’s just flat out embarrassingly bad.  A lot of church marketing is not just unoriginal but it’s beating a dead horse that was dead a decade ago.  I can’t describe how much I cringe every time I see a church sign with a cheesy Christian cliché on it.  And if I see another “Got Jesus?” t-shirt, I might not be able to keep myself from chasing after the person with a lighter.

The truth is a lot of church marketing is embarrassingly bad, but it doesn’t have to be.  That’s why the Center for Church Communications started Church Marketing Sucks.  Churches are led by the Creator of the universe, and so churches should lead the world in creativity, originality, and inspiration.  Doing marketing well is not an effort to “out-cool” other churches or keep up with secular marketing trends, but rather to express what the church is all about in ways that reveal our creative, inspiring God.

4) Marketing is annoying.
We all hate commercials that interrupt our favorite TV show, right?  (I thank God for my DVR!)  We hate junk mail.  We hate the endless promos at the beginning of a movie.  We hate it when someone rings our doorbell during dinner to sell us magazines.   The last thing churches should be doing is annoying people, right?

Well, yes, but I haven’t come across a church yet that wants to annoy people.  Marketing doesn’t have to be annoying.  Do you ever look through the ads in the Sunday paper?  Ever save that $5 off coupon that came in the mail?  Marketing is annoying when it for something you’re not interested in or it’s at a bad time, but when we’re interested in something and the timing is right, we actually appreciate it.  The key is getting information to the right people at the right time.

This is why it’s so important that your church have a good website, that it be featured prominently in search engines, and for the church to utilize social media to connect with members and reach out.  If the key is getting information to the right people at the right time, what could be better than getting information about your church to someone who is searching for a church when they’re searching?

5) The Church Shouldn’t Need To Market Itself.
If the church is effectively doing it’s ministry, then it will grow naturally as a result, right?

This is true, but can the church effectively do it’s ministry without telling people what it’s ministry is or that the ministry exists? If your church puts on a Christmas production, do you announce the production around town? Do you put it on your church sign? Do you ask your members to tell their friends? That’s all marketing. Marketing doesn’t replace the ministry of the church, the Gospel message, or the love we show each other.  It tells others about it.  It’s about informing people about the ministries and spreading the love of Christ.

What is Marketing?
Finally, I think part of the reason why some Christians think marketing is evil is because they associate marketing with advertising.  But marketing is much broader than advertising.  Here are some definitions of marketing I’ve come across…

“Marketing is basically sharing your love. Your passion. Your belief.”

“Marketing is simply the transfer of enthusiasm from one person to another.”

Who doesn’t want to share their love, passion and belief for God and their church?

Of course church marketing efforts are not a substitute for personal evangelism.  In fact, personal evangelism can be greatly enhanced by making it a part of the overall church marketing plan.  A church that develops a great website and provides printed brochures, invitation cards, and outreach events can make personal evangelism efforts much easier and more effective.

Answered Prayer

This is a great blog post from our friend Kimberly Lemler. You can find out more about Kimberly and her ministry, God’s Healing Power Radio Ministry, here. by Kimberly Lemler
God’s Healing Power Radio Ministry

Do you often feel as if your prayers are getting no further than the ceiling? Are you frustrated wondering if God has put you on “hold”? I think this has happened to all of us at one time or another. The Bible holds some interesting clues as to why our prayers are not being answered and one of those clues is in this passage:

“You ask God and yet fail to receive, because you ask with wrong purpose and evil, selfish motives. Your intention is [when you get what you desire] to spend it in sensual pleasures”. – James 4:3 Amplified

When we are not asking with right motives, God will not honor your prayers. He sees the intents of the heart and in order to protect you from yourself, He will not honor your requests. We must understand that God sees the beginning, the end, and everything in between. He will not be a participant in any kind of evil.

How Do We Pray?

The answer to this can be quite detailed, but the most important way that we can pray and see our prayers come to fruition is to pray in faith, with right motives, in line with the word of God. We pray the Word…which means that we pray God’s Word back to Him.

For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.” – Hebrews 4:12

When we speak the Word of God in prayer back to Him, we are praying in agreement with what He has already spoken, thereby releasing His power into our lives. Without this power our prayers are empty.

Find out what the scripture say about a particular situation that needs your prayers and then pray the scriptures. If you need healing, the Word says in 1 Peter 2:24  that Christ provided healing at the cross. Based on that knowledge, you can thank God that you have already received your healing and stand on this Word with your confession of faith until you see the manifestation take place.

I encourage you today to buy a promise book of scriptures at your local bookstore and begin to pray the everlasting Word of God so that you can begin to see many victories in your life and in the lives of those who are asking for your prayers…
